Why This Matters More Than You Think
A clogged or wrong-rated filter is one of the leading causes of HVAC system failure. It restricts airflow, makes the system work harder, raises your energy bills, and can cause the heat exchanger to crack or the evaporator coil to freeze. HVAC technicians see it constantly β and it's entirely preventable.
In Colorado specifically, filter maintenance is extra important. Wildfire smoke season (JuneβSeptember) can dramatically increase particulate load on your filter. Denver's dry air and cottonwood season also mean filters clog faster than in more humid climates.
The Rating Systems β MERV, MPR, and FPR Explained
Walk into any hardware store and you'll see three different rating systems. They all measure the same thing β filtration efficiency β but were created by different manufacturers. Here's how they map to each other:
| MERV (Industry Standard) | MPR (3M/Filtrete) | FPR (Home Depot) | What It Filters | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MERV 1β4 | Under 300 | 4 | Large dust, pollen, carpet fibers | Protecting equipment only β not air quality |
| MERV 5β8 | 300β600 | 5β6 | Dust mites, mold spores, pet dander, larger particles | Basic residential β acceptable minimum |
| MERV 8β11 β Recommended | 600β1200 | 7β9 | Fine dust, smoke particles, wildfire smoke, most allergens | Most Colorado homes β sweet spot of filtration vs. airflow |
| MERV 12β13 | 1500β1900 | 10 | Bacteria, virus carriers, auto emissions, fine smoke | Allergy/asthma households β verify HVAC can handle restriction |
| MERV 14β16 | 1900+ | 10 | Very fine particles, most bacteria | Commercial/medical β too restrictive for most home HVAC |
Filter Types β From Fiberglass to Electronic
Fiberglass (Flat Panel)
The cheap blue/gray disposable filters. MERV 1β4. Protects your HVAC equipment but does almost nothing for air quality. You can see through them when held up to light.
Pleated (Polyester/Cotton)
The standard choice. MERV 8β13. More surface area than flat panel = better filtration without killing airflow. Available everywhere, affordable in bulk. This is what most homes should use.
Electrostatic (Self-Charging)
Uses static electricity generated by airflow to attract particles. MERV 8β10 equivalent. Washable and reusable β change cost is near zero. Works well but can lose charge over time.
Electronic Air Cleaners (EAC)
Whole-house systems installed in the ductwork. Use an electric charge to capture particles on collector plates. MERV 10β12 equivalent. Plates need cleaning every 1β3 months or they lose effectiveness fast.
HEPA (Standalone)
MERV 17+. True HEPA filters are too restrictive for standard home HVAC ductwork β they'll damage most systems. Used in standalone air purifiers, not in-duct. Don't put HEPA in your furnace slot.
Carbon/Activated Carbon
Added carbon layer removes odors, VOCs, and gases β not just particles. Great for homes with pets, smokers, or near wildfire smoke. Usually paired with a pleated base. MERV rating varies.
How Often to Change Your Filter
The "change every 3 months" advice is a generic starting point. Your actual schedule depends on your situation:
- Basic 1" pleated, no pets, no allergies: Every 90 days
- 1" pleated, 1β2 pets: Every 60 days
- 1" pleated, pets + allergies: Every 20β45 days
- Thicker 4β5" media filters: Every 6β12 months
- Colorado wildfire season (JuneβSept): Check monthly β may need to change mid-cycle
- Electronic air cleaners: Clean collector plates every 4β6 weeks
The Right MERV for Colorado Homes
MERV 8β11 is the sweet spot for most Front Range homes. It captures fine dust, pet dander, pollen, mold spores, and wildfire smoke particles without restricting airflow enough to stress your system. Going higher (MERV 13+) is fine if your HVAC manual says it supports it β but check first. Many older systems will struggle with high-restriction filters.
